Henry Burris, the gridiron legend, conquered 20 electrifying seasons of professional football, with a blazing stint in the Canadian Football League and a dazzling two-year cameo in the NFL. His illustrious career sparkles with three Grey Cup championships, hoisting the coveted trophy twice with the Calgary Stampeders in 1998 and 2008, where he etched his name into the annals of history during a glorious decade. A triumphant crescendo came with the Ottawa Redblacks in 2016, solidifying his status as a gridiron titan. Burris proudly claims the throne as the CFL's third all-time regular-season great.
Post-retirement, Burris pivoted effortlessly to the broadcasting arena, gracing screens on CTV Morning Live Ottawa and lending his voice to the CFL on both TSN TV and Radio. Beyond the bright lights, he's carved a legacy as a community stalwart, renowned for his unwavering commitment on and off the hallowed turf. Together with his wife, Nicole, he birthed the Henry Burris All Star Weekend, a soaring spectacle that spanned 15 awe-inspiring years, uniting Calgary, Alberta, and Ottawa, Ontario. In this remarkable journey, they unfurled the banner of philanthropy, raising an astonishing 5 million dollars in support of Big Brothers and Big Sisters, lighting the way for countless young lives.
The two-time CFL Most Outstanding Player recently donned the coach's hat, serving as an offensive quality control maestro for the Chicago Bears in 2021. His meteoric rise, ignited by the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship program in July 2020, catapulted him to the NFL stage. Though the winds of change blew through Chicago after the 2021 season, destiny now invites him to join the illustrious staff of former Super Bowl-winning head coach Doug Pederson in Jacksonville.
Born in Spiro, Oklahoma, Henry is a love story personified, married to his college sweetheart, Nicole. Their union has born two remarkable sons, Armand (17) and Barron (14), who are poised to follow in their parents' formidable footsteps, both athletically and academically. Nicole's own star shines brightly, having been inducted into the Temple Athletics Hall of Fame in 2020 and earning her spot-on US lacrosse's prestigious "All-Black" team. This tribute, in partnership with Blaxers Blog, honors over 50 Black men and women who have achieved monumental feats on the field at both the college and professional levels, a fitting celebration during Black History Month.
Burris started 229 games and completed a record of 118-108-3 in the CFL. He retired with 63,639 passing yards, which ranked third in CFL history, threw 373 touchdown passes with 227 interceptions and a passer efficiency rating of 93.6. He had 18 games in which he threw for 400 yards and 93 games with more than 300 yards.
